Exporting Sella Basmati to Saudi Arabia: The SFDA, Halal & Labeling Checklist

Saudi Arabia imports more basmati rice than any other country on earth — and the overwhelming majority of it is sella (parboiled) basmati, prized by Saudi households and the Kingdom's enormous catering sector for grains that never turn sticky. But entering this market is a compliance exercise as much as a commercial one. Here is the checklist we work through with every Saudi buyer.

1. SFDA Registration

Every food product entering the Kingdom must be registered with the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) through the importer's account on the SFDA's e-services portal. The supplier's role is to provide a complete technical file: product specification, ingredient declaration (for rice: variety and crop year), facility details and label artwork. A supplier who delivers this file ready-made saves the importer weeks of back-and-forth — which is exactly why we prepare SFDA product files as a standard part of every Saudi offer.

2. Halal Certification

While rice itself is inherently halal, Saudi importers and retail chains increasingly require a Halal certificate covering processing and packing from a certification body recognized by the Saudi authorities. This certifies that the facility, handling and packaging chain meet halal integrity requirements — no cross-contamination with non-halal goods in storage or transport.

3. Arabic Labeling — Get This Right the First Time

Label rejections are the most common (and most avoidable) cause of customs delays at Jeddah and Dammam. The label must carry, in Arabic or bilingual Arabic-English:

  • Product name and variety (e.g. أرز بسمتي سيلا — sella basmati rice)
  • Net weight, country of origin (India), and the importer's name and address
  • Production and expiry dates in both Hijri and Gregorian calendars
  • Storage conditions and batch/lot number for traceability

4. What Saudi Buyers Actually Order

The volume market is 1121 Golden Sella in 5 kg, 10 kg and 40 kg packs — much of it under the importer's own brand. Private-label capability is therefore not an extra; it is the entry ticket. We print buyer-brand bags with compliant Arabic labels and hold artwork on file so repeat orders ship without lead-time penalties.

The Bottom Line

Saudi Arabia rewards suppliers who make compliance effortless for the importer. Our Saudi-ready package — SFDA technical file, Halal documentation, Hijri-Gregorian labels and private-label sella packing — is built to do exactly that. Explore our basmati grades or اقرأ بالعربية.
